The House began its August Recess, but not before passing a continuing resolution to fund the federal government until Dec. 4, as well as four major pieces of legislation. In the final days of what appeared to be a rather unproductive month, Speaker Mike Johnson was able to reach consensus among the Republican majority on the annual National Defense Authorization Act, the budget resolution for Reconciliation 3.0, and a bill to further restrict lawmakers’ ability to trade stocks. The one setback for Johnson and President Donald Trump was the approval of a War Powers Resolution directing the president to end operations in Iran. The House will return to Washington on Aug. 31.

The Senate will remain in Washington, D.C., until Aug. 8. During this time, Senate Republicans hope to pass their own continuing resolution. The Senate is not expected to take up the reconciliation package before they recess.
