Learn MoreHistory
For nearly six decades, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association (CREDA) has evolved alongside the commercial real estate industry, expanding its reach, influence and impact while remaining committed to advancing responsible development and supporting the professionals who shape communities across North America.
1967: The Beginning
Nine industrial park owners and developers met on September 12, 1967, in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, to create a forum for sharing information, establishing development standards and advocating for policies that supported growth. Their efforts led to the formation of the National Association of Industrial Parks (NAIP).
1976: Expanding the Mission
As the industry evolved and office development became an increasingly important part of members' businesses, the association changed its name to the National Association for Industrial and Office Parks (NAIOP), reflecting a broader membership and mission.
2009: Embracing a Broader Industry
With members active across a growing range of commercial real estate sectors, the association retired the words behind the NAIOP acronym. This change recognized the expanding scope of the industry and the diverse professionals who make up the organization.
2017: Celebrating 50 Years
NAIOP marked its 50th anniversary with a year-long celebration recognizing the members, leaders and volunteers whose vision and dedication helped build one of North America's most influential commercial real estate associations.
2026: Becoming CREDA
On July 1, 2026, NAIOP became the Commercial Real Estate Development Association (CREDA). The new name more clearly communicates the association's purpose and the work of its members while honoring nearly 60 years of leadership, advocacy, education and industry advancement. Today, CREDA represents more than 21,000 members across 55 chapters in North America. The association serves developers, owners, investors and related professionals through industry-leading advocacy, research, education and business networking opportunities.
Through the CREDA Research Foundation, the association also supports independent research that helps industry leaders, policymakers and communities better understand the economic impact and future of commercial real estate development.
