Republican leaders in the House of Representatives are pushing to get several important legislative priorities passed before the chamber begins their summer recess at the end of this week. Specifically, the House will vote on a third budget reconciliation bill – a priority for President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) – to provide additional military funding for the war in Iran. The reconciliation measure, which if adopted would be safe from a Democratic filibuster attempt in the Senate and could pass with only Republican support, would also include voter ID legislation demanded by the White House but strongly opposed by Democrats and some Senate Republicans.

The House will also attempt to pass a temporary measure to continue funding government operations past the Oct. 1 deadline for passing annual appropriations bills. The continuing resolution (CR) would fund several government agencies through Dec. 4 and would preemptively eliminate the threat of a government shutdown before the November election. House and Senate Democrats have indicated a willingness to vote for a “clean CR” that would not include any partisan measures, but some House Republicans are insisting on including certain funding reductions and policy initiatives before supporting the measure.
